When: 6-week course starting Monday, September 14 @ 7:00pm Where: Weston Community Center Cost: $215 non-member, $190 CRDTC member (must be logged in for discount) See website for membership information This course is for handlers who are interested in learning about Rally and Obedience including those interested in possibly competing in these events. Regardless of your goals, this type of training will help you build a better relationship with your dog. While Rally and Obedience both emphasize obedience skills and teamwork between dogs and handlers, their formats are different. In Rally, dog and handler teams navigate a course of numbered signs where each sign indicates a specific exercise (sit, down, turns, heeling pattern, recall, etc.) for the team to perform together. Handlers may use verbal commands, and hand signals during and between the exercises. In Obedience, dog and handler teams execute a fixed set of exercises including heeling patterns, sits, downs, stays, recalls, etc. Handlers may freely communicate with their dogs between exercises; but while performing each exercise, the handler may only use specific commands and signals. There is a lot of overlap in the exercises performed in Rally and Obedience as well as many differences. Some weeks will be spent reviewing Rally signs and completing Rally courses. Other weeks, teams will learn basic obedience exercises, how they relate to both Rally and Obedience, and how they can help you build a better relationship with your dog. Subjects we will cover include: - Specific exercises performed in both Rally and Obedience - How to break down each exercise into segments to teach them - Proper positioning for dogs and their handlers - Ring entry - How to perform exercises defined by various signs - Learning the “flow” of a Rally course - Moving between exercises - The rules and how they differ between classes - Making training fun for handler and dogs Note: All dog sports require a commitment as a team for you and your dog to work together. A strong connection and awareness of the task is where you find success. Come, learn, and have fun! You must pre-register for this course. Additional information: - Dogs and handlers must have experience training with their dog. - For all classes, please wait outside until the instructor comes to let in the group. - Please potty your dog before class and pick up after your dog. Buckets will be available to dispose of waste.
